iCommunity at The Wave 2025: iPass and the Future of the Digital Product Passport in Key Sectors
From March 19 to 21, 2025, the city of Zaragoza hosted the inaugural edition of The Wave 2025, an event that brought together more than 100 experts, dozens of companies, and an exhibition area featuring over 30 innovative technology projects. Conceived as a forum where technology, innovation, and business converge, The Wave has established itself from the outset as a key meeting point for those seeking to anticipate the trends that will transform the economy and society in the coming years.
Against this backdrop, iCommunity participated to present iPass, the product we are developing to address one of Europe's major regulatory and business priorities: the implementation of the Digital Product Passport (DPP).
The European Challenge: Transparency and Sustainability Across the Value Chain
The European Union has stipulated that, starting in 2026, certain strategic sectors will be required to introduce a Digital Product Passport. The objective is clear: to improve transparency, promote sustainability, and accelerate the transition to a circular economy, giving consumers, businesses, and authorities access to reliable information about products circulating in the European market.
The initial priority sectors are:
- Batteries: both industrial and electric vehicle batteries, with requirements covering raw material sourcing and recyclability.
- Textiles and footwear: clothing and shoes, with a focus on sustainable materials, production processes, and waste reduction.
- Construction materials: products such as concrete, steel, and insulation, documenting energy use, emissions, and resource efficiency.
- Electronics: consumer devices and components, with a focus on material origins, energy consumption, and recyclability.
Later, the DPP will extend to other sectors, such as furniture, and eventually to most consumer goods sold in the European Union.
In this context, iPass is positioned as the ideal technology tool to help companies comply with regulations and turn a regulatory obligation into a competitive advantage.
iCommunity's Offering at The Wave 2025. During our participation in The Wave, the iCommunity team focused its message on how iPass enables businesses to manage a product's entire lifecycle through an interoperable, secure, and easy-to-implement digital passport. The presentation attracted considerable interest, as companies and professionals in the sectors mentioned are looking for concrete answers to questions such as:
How can I collect and structure the information the EU requires for each product?
Which technologies ensure data accuracy and prevent tampering?
How can I integrate this requirement into my processes without increasing costs or slowing innovation?
With iPass, we demonstrated that the answer lies in a platform that combines:
- Interoperability with European standards, ensuring that digital passports can be accessed and used in any EU market.
- Easy integration, with APIs that connect the platform to companies' management systems.
- Transparency and traceability, providing clear data to end consumers and the relevant authorities.
- Verifiable digital credentials, ensuring the authenticity of information throughout the value chain.
Sector-Specific Use Cases Presented in Zaragoza. In our sessions and conversations with attendees, we demonstrated the practical potential of iPass in the priority sectors identified by the European Commission:
- Textiles and footwear: iPass enables companies to document the origin of fibers, the sustainability of production processes, and the recyclability of materials, offering end consumers transparent information about the garments they buy.
- Electronics: the digital passport can certify the origin of critical minerals, devices' energy consumption, and their recyclability. This helps combat planned obsolescence and facilitates the refurbishment of electronic products.
- Batteries: one of the most sensitive sectors because of its connection to the energy transition. With iPass, manufacturers and distributors can meet their obligation to report on each battery's raw materials, carbon footprint, and recyclability, building confidence among customers and regulators alike.
- Construction materials: iPass makes it easier to document energy efficiency, emissions, and resource use for materials such as steel, cement, and insulation—key factors in decarbonizing the construction sector.
Each of these examples illustrates how the digital passport, far from being a mere bureaucratic requirement, becomes a strategic tool for innovation, competitiveness, and trust.
Networking and Strategic Partnerships. The Wave 2025 was not only a place to showcase technology, but also an opportunity to build relationships and explore partnerships. The iCommunity team held meetings with:
- Construction material manufacturers interested in digitizing their documentation and demonstrating the positive impact of their sustainable innovations.
- Circular economy startups seeking to integrate with platforms such as iPass to offer complementary services, including recycling, refurbishment, and reverse logistics.
- Local and regional authorities that see the DPP as an opportunity to promote sustainability in their territories.
- Spanish textile companies beginning to prepare their value chains for the new regulations.
These meetings reinforce our conviction that iPass can become a de facto standard for DPP compliance across multiple industries.
Visibility and Impact Within the Innovation Ecosystem. Participating in The Wave also significantly boosted our visibility. Local and specialist media highlighted the relevance of the Digital Product Passport and the opportunity it represents for key sectors of the Spanish economy. Attendees' interest was reflected in strong participation in our talks and high visitor traffic at our stand, reinforcing iCommunity's position as a leading player in shaping Europe's future digital framework.
Next Steps After The Wave
Following our experience in Zaragoza, the iCommunity team has defined several action areas: Sector-specific pilots: launch iPass trials with textile, electronics, and construction material companies interested in getting ahead of the regulations.
- Strategic alliances: establish partnerships with industry associations and sector-specific clusters to scale up DPP adoption.
- Outreach and training: participate in events and training programs that help companies understand and apply DPP regulations.
- International expansion: strengthen our presence at European forums where the implementation of the Digital Product Passport is being discussed.
Conclusion
iCommunity's presence at The Wave 2025 confirmed that the priority sectors identified by the European Union are already seeking practical solutions to comply with the imminent Digital Product Passport requirement. With iPass, we offer a platform ready to support companies through this challenge, combining regulatory compliance, technological innovation, and added value for the market and consumers. Our participation delivered very positive results: product validation, genuine interest from the affected sectors, new strategic alliances, and greater visibility within Spain's innovation ecosystem.
